Legends

A couple millennia ago, someone looked up and decided that the stars weren't scattered across the sky.
They drew out constellations and named them after legends. Stories that would travel through generations.
There are no stars tonight. No constellations and no legends. Just me and my daughter whispering in the nightfall.
My voice echoes through the night sky.
Tonight we tell the starless sky who you were. The story of you. The star that finally found the sky that needed it. The people who loved you and the little girl that never met you.
She's a lot like you. Always looking for the brightest light in the darkness.
Always looking for smoke to find the wildfire burning a hidden forest.
It scares me how much she cares, because the world will give her every reason to stop believing.
She will learn, eventually, that she cannot save everyone. But that should never stop her from trying.
She sees you in every constellation, every story, every legend.
A couple of days ago she looked up at the sky and decided that you would always look after her. She drew you out in every star and gave them all your name.
You will never be a forgotten story, a nameless constellation.
When the time comes for us to meet again, she will carry us through time.
With a little girl sitting beside her, she'll tell the story of us to a starless sky.
