Shatter
For tonight, sleep is my enemy
Exhaustion creeps in, my bones ache
This is no longer within any realm of my control,
We have begun our descent down the spiral,
All the mistakes that led to now,
Mistakes we made with smiles,
Youth and love, need no forethought
Ready for ruin, even just for three seconds
Of childlike bliss, knowing for this night
You wouldn’t be completely alone
In this wide, vast universe
For exactly one day, you would smile
Before the flags waved red,
Ignorance is bliss but you can’t outrun
The lies you’ve told yourself,
Now you play through your days
Like a movie you never directed
Every memory tinted red, you can’t help yourself,
The illusion has been shattered ,
All the precious moments you cherished
Merely memories of a love you’d clung to,
A love you’d never known truly,
But glimpses were enough to spin a fairytale,
Out of two leads that never would’ve met,
Now memories play to moonlight sonata,
Each aiding the other in building us up,
And I saw for myself,
How every conversation has become
A memory of the first one,
Scrambling for scraps of the people we thought we knew,
And we cling to the memory
Of the versions of us that we made up.
